International Nurses Day: A moment to recognise, reflect and say thank you.

Every year on 12th May, we take a moment to recognise the incredible dedication, compassion, and impact of nurses through International Nurses Day. The date marks the birthday of Florence Nightingale – a name that still represents care, innovation, and the foundations of modern nursing as we know it today.

For us, it’s more than just a date in the calendar. It’s a chance to pause, reflect, and properly acknowledge the people who give so much of themselves every single day.

How International Nurses Day came about

International Nurses Day was officially established in 1974 by the International Council of Nurses (ICN), and it’s grown into a global moment of recognition ever since.

Each year, a theme is introduced to reflect what’s happening in the profession – whether that’s wellbeing, leadership, or the future of healthcare. It’s a reminder that while nurses are always there for us, they also need the right support, investment, and opportunities to thrive.

Why it really matters

Nurses are at the heart of healthcare. They’re often the first person you see, the one who stays by your side, and the one who makes difficult moments feel just a little bit easier.

International Nurses Day shines a light on:

  • The essential role nurses play in patient care
  • The pressures they face day to day
  • The importance of supporting them properly, not just recognising them

Appreciation is important but real, ongoing support is what truly makes a difference.

The legacy behind the day

Florence Nightingale is widely known as the founder of modern nursing, and for good reason. During the Crimean War, her focus on hygiene and patient care dramatically reduced death rates.

But her impact went far beyond that. She introduced data-led healthcare improvements, established professional training for nurses, and helped shape the standards we still rely on today.

That’s why International Nurses Day falls on her birthday it’s a tribute not just to her, but to everything nursing has become since.

Supporting nurses in the UK

Here in the UK, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) plays a huge role in supporting nurses throughout their careers. Founded in 1916, it was created to raise standards and give nurses a collective voice.

Today, it continues to do just that – offering guidance, education, and representation, while also campaigning for fair pay and safe working conditions. It’s an organisation that works tirelessly behind the scenes to support the people who support us.

Alongside this, the Florence Nightingale Foundation continues Nightingale’s legacy by investing in leadership and development. Through scholarships and training, it helps nurses grow, lead, and shape the future of healthcare.

How we can show our support

You don’t have to do something huge to make an impact. Often, it’s the small gestures that mean the most.

You could:

  • Share a simple thank you on social media
  • Recognise a nurse you know personally
  • Support organisations that champion the profession
  • Highlight the work of local healthcare teams

Even taking a moment to acknowledge what nurses do can go a long way.

Looking beyond the day

While International Nurses Day is a brilliant opportunity to show appreciation, it’s equally important to think about what happens after.

Supporting nurses means creating environments where they can thrive whether that’s through better working conditions, opportunities to develop, or simply spaces that allow them to pause and recharge during demanding days.

It’s about making sure the people who care for everyone else are also cared for.

Final thoughts

International Nurses Day is, at its heart, about people. It’s about recognising the skill, strength, and compassion that nurses bring to their roles every single day. From the legacy of Florence Nightingale to the incredible professionals working across healthcare today, it’s a reminder of just how vital this profession is and always will be.

And sometimes, the most important thing we can say is the simplest: thank you 💙
